The Divine Office App uses the current four-volume Liturgy of the Hours with a bias towards the USA calendar. It automatically downloads the appropriate prayers for each office, every day of the year, including Solemnities, Feasts, and Memorials. Tao te ching leadership quotes12/30/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like. Don’t resist them – that only creates sorrow. ![]() Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Life and death are one thread, the same line viewed from different sides. Knowing others is wisdom, knowing yourself is Enlightenment. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. He who does his duty as his own nature reveals it, never sins. It is better to do one’s own duty, however defective it may be, than to follow the duty of another, however well one may perform it. Yet for attacking that which is hard and strong nothing can surpass it. In the world there is nothing more submissive and weak than water. If you would take, you must first give, this is the beginning of intelligence. If you are not afraid of dying, there is nothing you cannot achieve. If you realize that all things change, there is nothing you will try to hold on to. If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading. When states are in confusion there will be faithful servants. When relatives fall out with one another there will be filial duty and love. When cleverness and knowledge arise great lies will flourish. If the Great Way perishes there will morality and duty. I have just three things to teach: simplicity, patience, compassion. I do not concern myself with gods and spirits either good or evil nor do I serve any. How could man rejoice in victory and delight in the slaughter of men? He who knows that enough is enough will always have enough. He who does not trust enough, Will not be trusted. He who controls others may be powerful, but he who has mastered himself is mightier still. He who conquers others is strong He who conquers himself is mighty. Great indeed is the sublimity of the Creative, to which all beings owe their beginning and which permeates all heaven. Big ben web cam12/30/2023 ![]() ![]() He came up with the solution of using metals of differing temperature expansion coefficient so that the pendulum doesn’t change in length as the temperature changes with the seasons. This was yet another of John Harrison’s genius ideas (you probably know him from longitude fame). The clock derives its remarkable accuracy in part from the temperature compensation which is built into the construction of the pendulum. The pendulum needs to be lifted out of the clock so that the spring can be closely inspected. Like any metal, it has the potential to suffer from fatigue. That’s nearly 8m times a year, bending the pendulum spring. The pendulum swings back and forth 21,600 times a day. Pendulum suspension from a Smith of Derby clock. If you look very closely, you will see that the minute hand doesn’t move smoothly but it sits still most of the time, only moving on each tick by 1.5cm. The swinging pendulum releases the “escapement” every two seconds which then turns the hands on the clock’s four faces. The pendulum suspension spring is especially critical because it holds up the huge pendulum bob which weighs 321kg. If any of these weights falls out of control (as in the 1976 incident), they could do a lot of damage. Two other weights that ring the bells are each over a tonne. The “drive train” that keeps the pendulum swinging and that turns the hands is driven by a weight of about 100kg. The weights that drive the clock are, like the bells and hammers, unimaginably huge. The resulting damage took months to repair.īig Ben’s clock has had only one major breakdown, in 1976. In 1976 the speed regulator for the chimes broke and the mechanism sped up to destruction. In its 162-year history it has only had one major breakdown. The clock mechanism itself is remarkable. There are plumbing and electrical works to be done for a lift to be installed in one of the ventilation shafts, toilet facilities and the fitting of low-energy lighting. There is water damage to the masonry and condensation problems will be addressed, too. There is corrosion damage to the cast iron roof and to the belfry structure which keeps the bells in place. But a clock just doesn’t stop – especially not a clock as iconic as the Great Clock at the Palace of Westminster. It is convenient to choose a day when we’re out of the house to paint the doors, or when we don’t need the car to repair the brakes. The Illustrated News of the World December 4 1858Īny building or machine needs regular maintenance – we paint our doors and windows when they need it and we repair or replace our cars quite routinely. ![]() Instead, it is the Elizabeth Tower (1859) and the clock mechanism (1854), designed by Denison and Airy, that need attention.īig Ben in 1858. The cracked bell has a characteristic sound which we have all grown to love, so maybe best leave it alone. Instead the bell was rotated one eighth of a turn and a lighter (200kg) hammer was installed. The bell weighs nearly 14 tonnes and it cracked in 1859 when it was first bonged with a hammer that was way too heavy. Of course, “Big Ben” is the nickname of the Great Bell and the bell itself is not in bad shape – even though it does have a huge crack in it. ![]()

Su 75 checkmate12/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Indeed, the most likely hypothesis is that Abu Dhabi would reproduce here the strategy implemented by Riyadh in 2017, when the Saudi Arabia announces order of S-400 batteries from Russia after Washington blocked export authorizations for certain critical military equipment in response to the Saudi intervention in Yemen. However, one must be cautious about such an interpretation. In fact, the Russian offer seems very attractive for Abu Dhabi, and could be interpreted as a rapprochement between the UAE and Russia. Today, only Israel has been authorized to acquire the F-35 in the Middle East, an advantage that the Jewish state is doing everything to preserve. And arguments, the Russians are not lacking, since according to the DefenseNews website, they would not hesitate to propose co-production on a 60%/40% basis for the Su-75, with very significant technology transfers at stake for the UAE aeronautical and defense industry, subject of a strategic ambition on the part of the country. Since then, the Russian services have multiplied their overtures in an attempt to attract the Emirati authorities to consider cooperation within the framework of the development of the Checkmate. With Joe Biden putting this program on hold following his accession to the White House, Russian hopes were revived, and the Su-75 was the center of attention at the Dubai Air Show in November 2021.īut it is unquestionably the order of 80 Rafale planes from France announced in December 2021, then the announcement of the suspension of negotiations between Abu Dhabi and Washington on the subject of the F-35s due to the lack of progress for a year, which gave new color to Russian ambitions for its device towards this client. With the announcement of the Emirati intention to acquire 50 F-35A from the United States, the chances for the Russian defense industrial conglomerate to impose itself in the country drastically declined. Moscow and Abu Dhabi have indeed been in discussion around a joint light fighter program for several years, while the Arab state has already purchased several major pieces of equipment from Russian manufacturers, including the Pantsir S-1 anti-aircraft system. This configuration can offer high maneuverability, reduced radar signature, and helps in reducing infrared signature from many aspects. The United Arab Emirates were identified as a strategic prospect by Rostec, right from the start of the communication around this program. The aircraft does indeed have a pair of tailerons splayed out at an angle instead of a traditional vertical and horizontal stabilizer arrangement. The staple infrared search and track system housing is mounted in front of the canopy as it is on all of Russia’s modern fighters. The aircraft also has a slide-back bubble canopy like the Su-57 Felon, the advanced heavy fighter that this design likely shares a lot of subsystem architecture and other technology with, War Zone reported. This configuration would help provide steady airflow to the engine across a wide operating envelope without complex mechanical systems and controls, but it would also work to help block the engine fan face from radar waves from most angles. ![]() According to, The War Zone, the aircraft design has a single angular air inlet situated under its forward fuselage that looks like a Diverterless Supersonic Inlet (DSI). ![]()

Galaxy lightspeed login12/29/2023 ![]() We asked Rob Zellem, exoplanet-hunter and staff scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab, a few frequently asked questions about the speed of light.ĭr. Related: Why the universe is all history Speed of light FAQs answered by an expert Objects that are 10 billion light-years away from us appear to astronomers as they looked 10 billion years ago - relatively soon after the beginning of the universe - rather than how they appear today. This principle allows astronomers to see the universe as it looked after the Big Bang, which took place about 13.8 billion years ago. When astronomers study objects that are far away, they are seeing light that shows the objects as they existed at the time that light left them. And everything astronomers "see" in the distant universe is literally history. Stars and other objects beyond our solar system lie anywhere from a few light-years to a few billion light-years away. ![]() ![]() "To obtain an idea of the size of a light-year, take the circumference of the Earth (24,900 miles), lay it out in a straight line, multiply the length of the line by 7.5 (the corresponding distance is one light-second), then place 31.6 million similar lines end to end," NASA's Glenn Research Center says on its website. Light from Alpha Centauri, which is the nearest star system to our own, requires roughly 4.3 years to get here, so Alpha Centauri is 4.3 light-years away. Sunlight takes about 8 minutes to reach our eyes, so the sun is about 8 light minutes away. Light travels from the moon to our eyes in about 1 second, which means the moon is about 1 light-second away. So far no one's been able to demonstrate a real warp drive, but that hasn't slowed our collective hurtle toward new stories, new inventions and new realms of physics. Through some crafty equations, it also helps define the kilogram and the temperature unit Kelvin.īut despite the speed of light's reputation as a universal constant, scientists and science fiction writers alike spend time contemplating faster-than-light travel. National Institute of Standards and Technology, it is used to define international standard measurements like the meter (and by extension, the mile, the foot and the inch). The speed of light is so immutable that, according to the U.S. That means the speed of light functions as a speed limit on the whole universe. The theory states that as matter approaches the speed of light, the matter's mass becomes infinite. ![]() According to physicist Albert Einstein's theory of special relativity, on which much of modern physics is based, nothing in the universe can travel faster than light. ![]() |
